How Long Does It Take To Make Money From Blogging
How long does it take to make money from blogging? Less than 30 days – 12 months. Apparently, it depends. From my experience, you can start a blog today and make money the next day. Everybody can do it. However, blogging is not a get-rich-quick scheme, and I vehemently recommend that you have a long-term blueprint. It requires work, knowledge and time-tested strategies to pull off.
While it’s very much possible to start today and make money the next day, it’s also very likely that some people may not make money blogging in their first 12 months, and some will probably not ever make any money before quitting.
In 2016, when I first launched my blog, I made $0.80 in my first 1 year of blogging before I eventually shut down the blog. Whereas in 2024, I started a blog, and the blog generated $57 in less than 48 hours.
So you see, there are possibilities on both ends.
Plus, I’ve known bloggers who have started today and made more than $300 in less than 48 hours. I don’t even want to talk about the pro-bloggers involved in arbitrage.
When it comes to how long it takes to make money blogging, there are a plethora of factors that determine how long it will take for your blog to start generating revenue. Some of these are the monetization method, traffic and your experience.
For me, in 2016, there was clearly a lack of adequate information on the blogging landscape. I was suffering from what I called “information malnutrition.” Apparently, I had ventured into blogging with the wrong mindset. It was a ‘make it in 12 months, or it doesn’t work’ scenario, even though I lacked adequate knowledge to make that happen in 12 months.
Although it’s absolutely crucial to think of how long it might take to make money from blogging, such thoughts should never be considered in isolation.
Factors That Determine How Long It Takes To Make Money From Blogging
To accurately determine how long it will take you to make money, we might need to consider the following factors:
1. What is your monetization model?
In my other publication, How To Make Money Blogging, I detailed the different monetization options available to beginners and pro-bloggers.
For instance, if your primary monetization option is through Google AdSense, it means that to make money blogging, you’ll have to wait until you get your Google AdSense approval. This process can last up to 12 months. But using other native displayed ad options I discussed there, you can get started immediately.
2. What is your level of experience?
Experience/knowledge in blogging matters a lot. Do you understand keyword research and email marketing? How about creating a lead magnet to attract readers? Or the different monetization methods like online courses, sponsored posts, service consultancy, ebook sales, etc.
They ensure that you know the right buttons to click at all times. It altogether takes away guesswork, thereby reducing the length of time it takes to make money blogging.
For example, as someone with almost a decade of experience in blogging, I can easily identify better monetization options to achieve the goal of making money immediately than a newbie. A beginner, especially those who do not have a more experienced person to confide in, will most likely rely solely on information they get online.
While that isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it’s important to note that some online content is disseminated by creators with no practical experience, and some of the information is outdated. Imagine trusting a chef who has never cooked to prepare your meal, using medical advice from the 1800s to treat modern diseases, relying on a doctor who has only read about surgeries to perform an operation, or using an old map to navigate a city that has dramatically changed over the years.
An OG in blogging is able to have that foresight to know which information isn’t a true representation of fact or outdated knowledge

3. How much traffic does your blog receive daily?
Traffic equals money. There’s no two ways about that. But, often, when I interact with beginners, they never consider this as a strong factor. Some erroneously believe that simply posting blog posts on their blog is what is needed to make money.

One told me she never knew she had to get people to see her post because, clearly, she didn’t know how to do that until I pointed her to my posts on 10 different methods to get traffic to a blog.
Regardless of the monetization option you choose, traffic is what generates the money.
Please note that you do not make money from your blog simply because people visit the blog. That’s a wrong notion. You make money when the visitors see, click an ad or buy a product from/through your blog.

Hence, the more people (traffic) that visit your blog, the higher the chance of making money from blogging.

Plus, blogging is a career; even though some take up the craft as a hobby, it has the capacity to replace your current 9-5. And, like all careers, it takes time to blossom into full maturity.
As I said, to make money blogging, there are different displayed ad networks you can sign up for. While some require a rigorous approval process, others have an instant approval process. Other methods could be through sponsored posts or other monetization methods.
